Dispelling Beauty Myths: Mastectomy
"I spent a lot of my life trying to fit into boxes, and trying to be some way for other people. But when I went topless at Afropunk, I realized I don't need to be anything for anybody for me."

In our newest episode of Dispelling Beauty Myths with Allure Magazine, we’re featuring a woman who is changing the way we think about beauty and our breasts. After a hard-fought battle against bilateral breast cancer and a lifetime of tactics for survival she’s had to gain while moving through the world as a black queer woman, 31 year old Ericka Hart is proud of the scars that have replaced her nipples. While undergoing the arduous process of breast reconstruction, she realized there are almost no images of black women who have had mastectomies or reconstructive surgery online, so she went topless at Afropunk Festival last year and the photos of her quickly went viral. Shame-free, Ericka is single handedly smashing the boxes society puts on queer women, women of color, and cancer survivors with aplomb and style.
